BEVERLY ECKERT 9/11 ADVOCATE IS REMEMBERED AT 9/11 MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN SHERMAN OAKS FIRE STATION 88 IN SHERMAN OAKS, CALIFORNIA

February 14, 2009, Los Angeles, CA-- As our country now mourns the tragedy of the Continental Airlines commuter jet last Thursday night in New York; we at the 9/11 Memorial, Los Angeles Fire Station 88, 5101 Sepulveda Blvd., Sherman Oaks, California, 91403 remember ALL those lost and the lady who turned her heart-felt grief into advocacy for the families of and 9/11 victims and survivors. Beverly Eckert's work began after she lost her beloved husband Sean Rooney on 9/11 in the south tower of the World Trade Center. Her tireless work changed and defined the way America protects citizens against terror attacks. She met and worked with the Reverend Bill Minson who has been the inspiration behind our WE REMEMBER WALKS here in Sherman Oaks. Reverend Bill has worked with the 9/11 families since the attacks. Reverend Bill and Beverly Eckert met shortly after 9/11 and formed a shared devotion to the victims and surviving families of 9/11. In fact Eckert and 9/11 families met with President Obama last week. Even though Reverend Bill was not at that meeting last week, Eckert and Rev. Bill had worked so closely that she had penned the following letter to then President-Elect Obama:

November 6, 2008

Dear President-Elect Obama,

The election on November 4th ushered in a new era of hope for America. Your challenge to every citizen to help make this country a better place could find no one more dedicated to that cause than Reverend Bill Minson.

I first met Reverend Minson when he was providing spiritual comfort and moral support to the rescue workers and families at Ground Zero. He was a steadying and comforting presence in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, providing unflagging support to every family member and first responder he encountered, and to our myriad and challenging causes. He has justifiably earned the admiration and respect of countless individuals for the selfless role he played then, and now, as he continues to support those who are dealing with the long-term effects of 9/11.

I consider it a great privilege to have the opportunity to write this letter in support of Reverend Minson. I know from personal experience that he is a very capable advisor, based on my frequent interaction with him during my past affiliations as Co-Founder of Voices of September 11th and as a Board Member of the Coalition of 9/11 Families. Additionally, because of my activism in Washington as one of the founding members of The Family Steering Committee for the 9/11 Commission, I can attest to the value that Bill will bring to your administration as you cope with the political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian challenges of a post-9/11 world.

Sincerely,
Beverly Eckert

Reverend Bill has been devastated by the passing of Beverly Eckert and prays for her family and all of those suffering yet another loss. Once again we are connected by grief needing to unite and pray for all those suffer.

For anyone who wishes to pay their respects to a lady who made her life count by putting others first and ALL those lost last week, the 9/11 Memorial in Sherman Oaks is available 24 hours a day sitting in front of LAFD Fire Station 88. The Urban Search and Rescue Team based at Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks was the first to respond on 9/11 to the attacks at the WTC. The Memorial Fountain houses a 750 pound piece of the WTC and a 100 pound piece of the Pentagon. Carrie Konjoyan, Memorial coordinator, offers, "once again we hope and pray all those who want will come to the memorial for a moment or hour leave a note or sit and pray and never forget the work of Beverly Eckert and all those who risk their lives daily. Some have already started coming knowing this west coast site is so closely connected to the east coast. The site has hosted several prayer vigils for victims of the Esperanza fire, families and victims of 9/11, and WE REMEMBER WALKS..
